Cancer, Child Abuse, Suicide, Arson and Some other Stuff I Find Funny…

“Through humour, you can soften some of the worst blows life has to offer. And once you find the laughter, no matter how painful the situation, you can survive it.”

Today I’m going to give you a slight, ever so slight glimpse behind the curtain. I’m going to show you what makes me laugh… hard. Humour is a very important part of who I am, it’s woven into nearly everything I do. I was serious once – about 9 years back, it didn’t take.

So it was the funny side of the street from then on, of course I always liked being funny but I had always struggled to keep the lid on. The little voice in the back of my head always whispering, be serious, smarten up – there is a time and a place, that comment is absolutely not appropriate at this time. But I decided, I hated censoring myself – tell me if this sounds familiar – you’re in some social situation and you have a perfect opportunity to either a) break up the whole room with a well-timed comment – b) freeze, at a pivotal moment in the conversation, only to think of the perfect response later while driving home and stewing in frustration or c) turtle, curling into a tight fetal ball and playing dead until the group loses interest and moves on…

Well I decided to remove the filter, I try not to be cruel or mean or hurtful – occasionally someone will be begging for it, in which case I find it necessary to administer my own brand of vigilante hilarity. Mostly I’m harmless. I try to laugh a lot everyday but it’s almost always a chuckle – I’ve never really been a head back hearty guffaw type, although I treasure the times I’ve laughed until tears fell and sides ached… I remember reading a quote years back by a comedian, I can’t recall who, but they said truly funny people upon hearing a really funny joke or statement, in most cases will not laugh outright, but smile and think hmmmm, that is really funny. I think to me it’s just being able to appreciate something clever and funny…..

Anyways with that being said I present to you one of the things I’ve found that I find ridiculously funny, in most cases, my funny bone is tickled by Black Humour, there is just something about seeing a black guy fall down that cracks me up….

NO, NO I’m kidding I mean the other Black Humour. The one that tries to make light of serious and often taboo subject matter, some comedians use it as a tool for exploring vulgar issues, provoking discomfort and serious thought as well as amusement. I am most definitely NOT talking about simply swearing, poo & fart jokes – detest is not a strong enough word to explain my stance on the that….. Popular themes of the genre include murder, suicide, war, barbarism, drug abuse, terminal illness, domestic violence, insanity, crime, disease, racism and both physical and mental disabilities…. what’s not to like….. That being said, I present for your amusement this Monday morning, the most wonderful children’s dictionary ever, read and enjoy…..

Tell me these aren’t awesome… which was your favourite? My humour has helped me come through a lot of potentially very miserable circumstances recently and it’s something I will always treasure. Of course, having someone along for the ride makes everything better and I’m glad you’re here, but I’m not above going through some elaborate hoops to make myself laugh….

Have a Great Day….
