Underground Horrors & Altered DNA
Hey, have any of you heard something or other about some miners getting stuck, or rescued or something? I just caught it quickly out of the corner of my eye, briefly on some news channel – but just that once, and I haven’t heard a thing about it since, not on any television channels or in any newspapers or magazines or radio programs, or blog posts or news internet posts or newsletters or emails or on Facebook or twitter or in any local papers or in greeting cards or sky-writing or whispered waking dreams sent directly into my brain by angels from the heavens themselves… I just can’t find mention of it anywhere…. so anyone with any info on what happened to these chaps I would be much obliged….
Alright obviously I’m having a bit of a leg pull, on your part… You would literally have to be dead to not have been inundated every waking second of every day with information about the trapped miners, millisecond by millisecond. Actually I’m not even sure being dead would exclude you from having every sub-atomic particle of information, force blended into your DNA…. until you begin feeling claustrophobic because it’s like you too are in the mine…
Hey Chile dudes, I’m sorry you got trapped, I really am and I’m glad you’ve been rescued, I really am – BUT COME ON! World Media, Is there absolutely nothing else you could be reporting on besides as 20/20 and ABC News called it the “Miracle in the Mine”? Cue my super hard retching and professional level eye rolling… do I need to know about – Carlos Mamani Solis, 23, of Bolivia, the only non-Chilean trapped….. Ariel Ticona Yanez, 29, became a father during the ordeal. His daughter was named Esperanza, for Hope….. Víctor Zamora Bugueno, 33, wrote poetry underground….. Claudio Yanez Lagos, 34, promised he will marry his partner of 25 years and mother of his children when he emerges. The pair have grandchildren…. you see what I mean… huh! WAIT, that last dude is 34 years old and has been with his wife for 25 years! Now I am no mathematician BUT 34-25 = 9… They have been together since they were 9. NINE, NINE years old…..Clearly Chile has quite a bit more to answer for than trapped miners, what about their trapped minors… Did you see what I did there?
It got me to thinking about some sexy 9 year olds I know… wait, I mean, the horrors of child labour… OK, hang-on, let me tell you how I got here. So, being completely overwhelmed by the sheer tsunami of Chilean Miner information, I decided to write this post and even though I feel as if each and every one of the miners, the rescuers, the inhabitants of Copiapo and the citizens of Chile are my blood relations now, I still went online for more information…. When one types coal mine into Google, one of the top hits is for child labour and kids forced to work in the mines…. Cool.
Some of these websites have pictures from the turn of the century……
.
No not 1999 dumb ass – the previous century…. and while we’re at it, the fact that these kids from 1999 are holding up a sign extolling the virtues of safety is pretty freakin hilarious given that in most cases the biggest safety concern they have is getting a really bad case of carpel tunnel from playing too much XBox or PS3 or Wii…. or the latest affliction ravaging our children, texting thumb (yes, it’s a real condition)….. It’s funny because I’m pretty sure each and every one of our children, hell never mind the children if we were forced to endure what these 18th & 19th century kids had to endure – we would just lay down and die.
The kids in the following pictures are all, ALL under 10. It’s just crazy, look at their faces, the eyes are dead and they all look like little men, just weird miniature men and the girls too, just so so old before their time. In some cases these were our great or great great grandparents… as Bob Dylan so eloquently put it “The times, they are a’changin” — and good for us, it’s the nature of progress that each generation of parents busts their butt so that their children may have and live a more comfortable life than they themselves had.
But have we gone too far, are our kids too soft? Have we gone and made life so easy they have no concept of ambition or any significant work ethic beyond maxing out their friend counts on Facebook? Believe me, having to interview and hire kids just out of University, you would be horrified to discover just how little water is in the talent pool…..
Anyways let’s not turn this into a rant but take a look at the haunted faces on these kids and you tell me how the kids of today would react in their place?
.
Hug your kids, yes – encourage your kids, yes – love them with everything you’ve got, without question – BUT – every once in a while kick them in the butt and make sure they aren’t content coasting thru life… you can always scare them with stories of 9-year-old Minors in Chile……
Have a Great Day
